Although I have not personally used them, this state park also has a restaurant, a golf course, boat rentals, and cabin rentals. If you hope to rent a cabin start planning early. They fill up fast!
This small state park near Syracuse was unknown to me until very recently. A friend discovered it and brought me out. It's know for it's outstanding emerald green water, and even though I went as a storm arrived I could clearly see why. The lakes are surrounded by a well kept walking trail, with exceptionally well placed benches for amazing views. It's surrounded by trees, many of which are just turning color now. On the day of these pics it suddenly whipped up a storm so these don't do it justice. A hidden gem in central New York.
If you like the outdoors, this is one of the best parks that New York State has to offer. The park is open year round. During the peak summer months they charge an entrance fee (I believe it's about $8/car currently). Admission is free from Labor Day until the following Memorial day. There is a beach that is open for swimming during the summer months and there are ample picnic locations with outdoor grills and picnic tables. Camping is allowed, by reservation only, from May till October. For me, the best part of this park is the miles upon miles of recreational trails. Whatever your interest is hiking, biking, running, xcountry skiing, snowshoeing, or just walking the dog, there is enough varied terrain to interest nearly everyone. There are lake loop hiking trails, trails through old growth forest that lead to the remnants of Indian Ovens, and trails through the rolling hills and open prairie on the western end of the park. This park has it all. There is also a golf course and a Frisbee golf course if that sort of thing interests you.
Picnic areas are plentiful, and they have standard grills and lots of picnic tables, several per grill. There is also a concession stand. If you like hiking, the trails around the lakes offer gorgeous views and a fun walk without any hilly areas. I have also enjoyed camping here. There are two areas, one with shady plots and the other in the sun. I recommend the shady area as having a more wilderness feel. The campground area has a building with showers and bathrooms that are generally very clean, even at busy times.
Cool place to go hiking. Can't swim in the reef part of the lake, dew to underground current. Fun fact The park is centered on two small lakes, Green Lake and Round Lake, which have an unusual blue-green color. These lakes lie at the base of a gorge that is somewhat longer than a mile in length. The lakes and the gorge are remnants of the ice ages, and exemplify some of the unusual geology of upstate New York. Green Lake has a surface area of 65 acres and a maximum depth of 195 feet. Round Lake has a surface area of 34 acres and a maximum depth of 170 feet
One of my favorite places to hit the beach. Although the water in the main swimming area is fairly shallow, it is mostly clear, and it tends to be fairly warm in season. There are two deeper swimming areas — one for swimming laps and one with a diving board. Not every area is open at all times, so call ahead if something is particularly important to you. This beach gets busy on hot weekends and the holidays, but on weekday evenings or chillier days, it has a more secluded feel. There is a huge sandy area for building castles, and the beach house is adequate for changing although there are not any inside showers. There are small outdoor showers at a different places around the beach, but they are not always adequate for cleaning up after sand play.
This is an amazing place with trails ..some beach like sand plus boat and kayak rentals. Very peaceful! They have picnic tables and mini grills. They also offer camp sites and cabin rentals for a good price. The water is a beautiful green color. Amazing for a day trip or camping overnight
